Adventure travel does not necessarily mean swinging on a vine through the jungles of the Amazon, walking through a scorching desert, or losing your lunch on the high seas? You do not have to risk your life in a war zone or make yourself a target for a terrorist attack. Could this signify wriggling face-down through suffocating subterranean darkness, or clinging perilously to a sheer rock-face with only a thin cable between you and a hundred-foot drop into the rapids below?

The answer is no, even though all of those things are certainly the sort of adventures some people actively pursue. Adventure travel, really, is whatever you want it to be. It might involve physical risk, but it doesnt have to. It might mean travel to a distant and exotic place, but it doesnt have to. It might cost a lot of money, but it doesnt have to. If you travel somewhere, anywhere, and you have an experience that excites you, provides you with an escape from the ordinary, and leaves you feeling happy, then youve had an adventure.

Naturally, people have their own unique notion of the definition of adventure. People interested in history probably have other priorities over a trip to the gambling resorts of Las Vegas or Disney World’s colorful rides. However, it could be fun to visit historic events like the Tower of London or the grave of an ancestor they had always heard of but never seen. Discovering an unknown ancestor’s name can be almost as exciting as winning the lottery.

Most people would agree that adventure travel that involves sky diving, mountain climbing, shooting white water rapids in a kayak, or photographing polar bears in the Arctic would be exciting. But adventure travel can also involve a leisurely trip on the Mississippi River in a paddle wheeler, a stroll across the English countryside in search of a certain species of bird, a tour of the wineries of southern France, or a shell-collecting expedition on an out-of-the-way Caribbean beach.

Adventure traveling can be much more than a simple plane or train trip. You can find fun things to do in your own backyard, or no matter where you live, within a short driving distance. They don’t receive the same media attention as predominant places or businesses, therefore they take some searching. Adventure travel can even include visiting small museums or small sites of historical significance. little reservations for plants and beasts alike, refitted architecture or even towns and dwellings of historic value, et cetera. You do not have to own a car to have an adventure as there are local bus tours to the site available and you can join social groups who organize a group adventure.

Adventure travel can take you anywhere in the world, from the top of Mount Everest to the wilds of the Australian Outback. Adventure can even involve satisfying your curiosity as to what is in that ancient looking church even though you have ignored it a thousand times before.
