Open Question: What do you think of my story?
I sit in the middle of the park, surrounded by pink and white blossom. That’s my name, Blossom. I get picked on at school but I don’t care.
My little sister, Hazel comes up to me. “Look what i found!” she was holding a dead bird. “Hazel…that’s a dead bird…”
“I know!” she says brightly. I glance hopefully at mum, but she just laughs. “Blossom, i’ll be over the other side of the park if you need me!”
“K mum!” And she dissapears into the disdance.
“Lets go sit by the pond.” I suggest. Hazel shrugs and walks over. I suddenly see a steep path into the lake. I panic.
“Hazel! D-” But it’s too late. She tumbles into the lake. And dissapears.
I panic. Should I dive in myself, or call for help?
I dive in, the lakes pretty deep and I’m a weak swimmer. I struggle to hold my breath. I plunge underwater. I see a body. I swim towards it, and bang my leg on a rock. I can’t move it properly, but I’m close enough to grab onto Hazel, and push her up. Hazel has just learnt to swim, so I can hope she can swim to the bank.
Mum and Dad have spotted Hazel, and Dad dives in to get me just in time. I’m gasping for breath and so is Hazel. “Ow…my leg”
“Don’t worry. The clinic is over there” Mum pointed to a white building, surrounded by blossom. Dad hauls me up and carries me to the clinic. People keep staring and laughing, I’m humiliated.
“That looks like a nice, clean, break” the doctor says to me. She passes me some crutches and what look like very weirdly patterned, very woolly socks. I put one on my foot on my broken leg and slip on the crutches. I practice walking. “This is hard” I complain.
“I’m afraid you’ll have to get used to it”
I think about my friends, and think how they thought the world of me, I think how I’ll get picked on even more now. I sigh, and smile awkwardly at the doctor, making my way out of the clinic. We make our way home, and when I collapse on my bed (carefully) I fall asleep. I dream of blossom, white and pink.
I wake up, and whoopee it’s Monday. Can’t wait to get teased. I reach for my crutches, and choose a purple woolly sock thing with lilac stars on it. I clutch onto the handrail, and finally get down the stairs. Mum is still asleep, so I make my own breakfast of Cookie crisp cereal with TWO glasses of milk chucked in. I lounge on the sofa, ‘till mum comes in to greet me. She sees my awkward frown. “What’s wrong Blossom?” she asks me.
“I’m SO going to get picked on”
“I’m sure it’ll turn out fine in the end” I smile and she helps me up into my bedroom. I pull on my Blossom Hill school uniform and slip on 1 black pump. I walk down the road to my school and already I’m the main attraction. My teacher, greets me. “Oh my goodness what happened to you?!”
“Haven’t you heard. It’s in the Gazette. My sister Hazel fell into the lake and I rescued her, banging my leg in the process” I huff, walking into class. Everyone is staring at me, and a little spike of hurt punches me. “As you can see, Blossom has broken her leg” the teacher starts. “I would like you all too be careful around her and not try to push her around” The class sigh. We start maths, and I can’t concentrate. Everyone is staring and whispering stuff about me. I hide myself behind a curtain of hair and my book.
At break time everyone picks on me. I sit down on the steps and wish I could be someone else. I’d be Ruby, smart and cool with chocolate brown, tussled hair flowing down to my waist… I wouldn’t be scared of anything, and nobody would EVER pick on me. Suddenly, Hazel walks up to me.
“What’s wrong?” she asks.
“I notice that my eyes are welling up with tears. I sniff. “Nothing” and I walk away from her.
This goes on all through school, and when it’s home time, I rush out and walk up the road to my house. When I get in, I speak to mum.
“Mum” I swallowed, “Today didn’t go very well. They picked on me for my broken leg aswell as my name”
“Well, the name is your dad’s fault” Mum says coldly.
“I know, and well, I’m wondering… Can I change my name to Ruby?”
Mum thinks. “Well, I’m not sure your dad would like that name…” She starts to scribble down some names on my old homework. She passes the paper to me.
“Emerald, Alex, Cassie, Star” I read out. “I think I choose…Star” I love that name. It makes me sound special.
“Star it is” Mum says firmly. She goes into the kitchen and has a talk with dad. She comes back in and smiles.
“He agrees. You want to come down and have it changed now?” I nod, and smile back. I might not be Ruby, fashionable and fearless, but I’m on the right track.
While mum phones up the school about my new name, I start thinking about my life. I note down everything that has happened:
Was born
Said first word: Mammy
Learnt to walk
Went to pre school
Hazel was born
Went to infants
Made friends
Went to juniors
Lost friends – was picked on
Saved Hazels life
Broke leg
Started make-over – Changed name to Star.
My life is like a story – At first, everything is perfect and norm
Resolved Question: Moms: What’s the longest amount of time you’ve left your child with someone else?
My husband and me are considering going on a retreat. We would leave very early friday morning, stay saturday and go home late sunday afternoon. We have a 6 year old son with autism, and he adores the lady who will be taking care of him. We would be about 45 minutes away from home at a lovely bed and breakfast. We’ve never taken a trip like this before, but we would really like to get away and have some couples time without him. I am also pregnant, so traveling via plane is not an option.
So I’m asking the moms out there: What’s the longest time you’ve spent away from your child/children? Did you regret the time away?
Let me know your thoughts. Please be tactful. Thanks.
That’s one of the biggest reasons why we’re not traveling more then 45 minutes away from home…just in case. This is the B&B we’re looking at: http://www.cedarsofwilliamsburg.com/
I’ve heard nothing but good things about this place.
Open Question: How does this sound to you?
I recently purchased a home in San Diego California. Along with this home came a totally detached 800 square foot split level Granny Flat. I am thinking of opening up a bed and breakfast back there. The Granny flat was built in 2003 so therefore it is fairly new. I am thinking of decorating it so attractively where when you walk in the door you feel so comfortable and cozy you wouldn’t want to leave. This place is totally private with an enclosed patio that no one can see into. There are double french doors that go out into the patio where I would put a above ground jacuzzi into it for your comfort. This is two levels. walk up four stairs and you are on the upper level where the living room is. There is a bathroom upstairs and one downstairs. The upstairs bathroom has a bathtub with jets. I would place a flokati rug by the fireplace and plasma Tv above the fireplace. Sensual smells and paint colors. As you can tell I am all over the place with this that is why I am here soliciting your advice and suggestions. I live in a residential neighborhood so therefore I am not sure as of yet if this is permitted, but if it is, I think that I am going to go for it if the Pros outweigh the cons. I would have a continental breakfast for you in the morning, a newspaper placed outside of your door and a 12:30pm check out time. This would be the most cozy bed and breakfast you have ever seen. Can you give me some suggestions? Pros, Cons? I need your help in developing a plan!!! Thank you in advance for your answers!!
If this doesn’t sound like a good plan, what would you do with the Granny Flat if it were yours? Please do not say rent it out monthly because I am looking to generate more income than that while being able to enjoy it myself from time to time. Thank you!!
You could also call it a hotel suite.
