As private yacht charters have become more popular over the years they have also become more affordable. Those who want to avoid the crowds on a cruise ship opt for the more intimate environment of a yacht charter.
Irrespective of whether you navigate the yacht yourself or not, yacht charters make for a wonderful adventure on which you can explore less navigated routes.
One of the toughest decisions you will take is deciding where to go because there are so many wonderful places that you can visit around the world for your holiday travel. Choose a place depending on what you like – heritage towns, wild and marine life, sandy beaches, scenic beauty or cities known for their nightlife.
When it comes to choosing the size of your yacht, you have to check the number of beds and cabins you will require for the people who will be onboard. Naturally the bigger the yacht, the more expensive it will be to charter it. Some of the yachts have basic amenities while others offer everything from jacuzzis and gyms to helipads and discotheques!
You don’t have to be a good sailor to use a private yacht charter because you have the option of hiring a yacht along with a captain. These are called skippered yacht charters. The advantage of hiring a yacht with a skipper is that he will be an extremely experienced sailor who is very familiar with the sailing route and the local weather conditions. You can also have a cook, hostess and other crew onboard if you want a truly luxurious holiday. These are known as crewed yacht charters.
If you are an experienced sailor you can consider choosing a bareboat charter which allows you to navigate the yacht yourself. You can arrive at the nearest port and then sail from there. Bareboat charters can be challenging but exhilarating because you will be sailing in unknown waters. Before you leave port you must check the yacht thoroughly and preferably you should do this at least one day before your sailing date.
Sea and wind conditions are very different for each sailing route. Wherever the waters are calm and the winds mild, sailors with intermediate sailing experience can navigate quite easily. Routes with unpredictable wind and weather conditions and treacherous currents require experienced sailors. If you have decided on a bareboat charter you must also make sure that you do a thorough study of the sailing conditions.
Lastly, always book with a reputable company with a proven track record so there are no nasty surprises when you are at sea.
