Schools are out for the summer, and the days are heating up. It may be time for you to take your family on a vacation to give them a much-needed break from the ordinary. So, from a faraway destination to the local amusement park, keep a few pointers in mind as you travel, to keep everyone healthy and safe this summer.

Once you decide where you want to take the family on vacation, make sure to bring the right kind of gear. For the beach or other outdoorsy location, be sure to bring enough sunscreen for everybody, and suggest that they all bring baseball caps or visors to protect their eyes. Looser, light clothing is a good idea, as well. Many folks live in flip-flops during the hot months, but sneakers are definitely a better option if you’ll be walking long distances.

You may find that soda or sports drinks quench your thirst on a hot summer’s day, but water is really your most effective option in terms of getting rehydrated. Try putting a few bottles in the freezer to take with you as you travel, and you won’t feel like you’re overheating out in the mid-day sun.

If you’re traveling in a group, be sure that you always stay together. Make sure everyone is present and accounted for as you see the sights and explore new areas. Keep valuables tucked away, and don’t wear jewelry or watches that aren’t necessary.

Take the time to get a clear sense of where you’ll be going before you take your group out on a tour of the area. This is particularly important if you are traveling to another country. Make it a point to get a map of where the tourist sites are, and if you still aren’t sure where you’re supposed to be going, ask for directions.

One important thing you should take care of before you travel to another country is to learn the local customs. In some places, habits we take for granted are felt to be uncouth. For example, should you travel to China, be aware that whistling or winking is considered rude, as is making direct eye contact.

Wherever your summer travels may take you, consider what you need to keep in mind before you get going on your vacation. Getting prepared can make your getaway much easier, and much safer for everyone involved.
