Open Question: where is the best place to stay for 6 months in Australia?
Hello..i am going to spend 6 months attaching to a univ either in the UK or Australia. But i’ve been to UK some yrs ago, and never been to Australia yet. I think I might go there for a change. Please can you choose for me a good place to stay in Australia? These are my details:
- will be paid by my sponsor only around Aust1400
-will bring 3 kids and plan to send them to public school
-will bring some savings to cover extra expenses for 6 mths (because people said the fellowship is not enough, and of course I must budget very very carefully)
-we will be covered by intenational health insurance
-we have return air ticket
-on holidays, we plan to visit other beautiful places in Australia, NZ and Tasmania

I am thinking of Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth but can you suggest the most affordable city for me, with good public transport, beautiful city, and close to lovely countryside, safer, and friendly community?

Is it free for my kids to go to public school? (as in the UK?)

Do we need to apply a visa before we go? (as for the UK, we don’t have to apply visa but the immigration officer at the airport will check our return ticket and some documents from the sponsor and univ, and then they’ll give us visitors visa and we can stay for 6 months. Is it the same with Australia?)

thanks in advance.

Open Question: why is my life like this?
I am kinda in a bind. I graduated a few months ago and did not work because of school. Anyway, I have been looking for work since graduation and I have found a civil service job about 30 minutes from my home. I have been in school for a long time, and I need to work for money and health insurance, just like everyone else on this planet. I have been too long without working. Anyway, I have one problem and that is my mother. She is dead set against me taking the job. Because she feels that the hours are horrible ( its from 3 to 11pm) and if I do take the job, she will not be able to travel during xmas holiday to see my sister, because she doesn’t want me to be alone for the holidays. Since I will have to stay home and not travel when starting a new job. I am working on driving because I haven’t driven in a while since I lived on campus. So she is worried about that. You normally, would say, why do you care about what your mother says, the problem is she obsesses about it, makes herself sick, and then ends up in the hospital with her constant dwelling on these things I need to do. She does go to therapy and takes medications but I don’t know how much of it she listens too. Then I feel guilty about the whole thing. I am well over 25 years old, I am not a kid. I don’t know what to do? please don’t make fun, its a serious problem, I have struggled with for so long, I am so tired of it. I kinda feel like drew barrymore character in grey gardens.

Open Question: How much does it cost to travel around the world?
I know it depends on many factors but I’d love to have an estimate. I’ll be travelling for about a year visiting 25 countries. Below I have listed the countries I’m going including how long I’ll be staying in each country.

Iraq - 4 weeks
Iran - 2 weeks
Saudi Arabia - 3 weeks
Syria - 2 weeks
Turkey - 2 weeks
Palestine - 2 weeks
Pakistan - 4 weeks
Dubai - 2 weeks
Thailand - 2 weeks
Japan - 2 weeks
China - 2 weeks
Indonesia - 2 weeks
Malaysia - 2 weeks

Egypt - 2 weeks
South Africa - 4 weeks

France - 2 weeks
Italy - 2 weeks
Spain - 2 weeks
Switzerland - 2 weeks

Australia - 2 weeks
New Zealand - 2 weeks

USA - 4 weeks
Jamaica - 2 weeks

Venezuela - 2 weeks
Brazil - 2 weeks

I think I’ll need about £35K for everything although I’d love to cut down. This amount includes the flights, packing up and travel insurance (basically everything I need before leaving) which I think should be about £5K. I don’t fancy staying at cheap unsafe hostels so I’ll be staying at reasonably priced secure hotels. I won’t be working while I’m there as it’s really meant to be a holiday for me to relax. I don’t drink or smoke so I won’t need to spend anything on that. What do you guys think? How much do I need? Any help will be highly appreciated. Thank you.
