Moving can be a very stressful time. There is so much to do! Not only do you need to worry about your next place of residence, you also need to tie up all loose ends where you are currently living. We’ve provided a checklist of things that need to be taken care of before you are out the door.

First of all, determine your budget when it comes to moving your stuff. You need to decide if you’re going to use a professional moving company or rent a moving truck. Look at the distance of your move and the amount of stuff you have. Make your decision based upon those factors, and of course, your budget.

Next, you need to pay up! Take care of all of your final bills at utilities, gas, cable, internet, phone, and any other miscellaneous companies such as a health club. Be sure to take care of this because you don’t want a collection company calling you a few months down the road charging you double because of a late payment. It’s really easy to forget about this kind of thing, so be sure to take care of it.

Next, the house needs to be packed. This can be one of the most hated parts of moving. Try to start early and take it one day at a time. Don’t save it all for one day! Box up the small things and leave the large things like furniture to the actual day of the move. When packing clothes, rolling them saves a lot of room. Utilize your suitcases and bags by packing clothing in them. If you have enough notice, let people know that you need boxes. Buying boxes can be annoying and expensive, especially when you’re on a budget.

Your house needs to be cleaned once the stuff is all out. As a courtesy to the next people moving in, think to yourself, if I were moving in, would I be satisfied with the cleanliness? To save time, a lot of people hire professional house cleaners. You can decide if you want to pay that.

If you’re moving a long distance, you will need to arrange for your vehicles to be transported. If you are able to drive your vehicles to your new location, that saves money. Depending on timing and distance, it can also make sense to have it shipped.

Even though there’s a lot to do, you can do it! Don’t forget these important steps in moving.
