As any parent knows, one of the biggest challenges they face when on a road trip is keeping the kids entertained. Long gone are the days where children were content reading a book or staring out the window. Technology has become just as much a part of the everyday lives of children as it has for adults so why not include some of the latest gaming technology on your next road trip? While the kids are playing games, you can have some peace and quiet.
The game Project Cobra has many people talking. Created and developed by Zi Ye and Hammad Khalid in the Human Media Lab at Queen’s University in Canada, Project Cobra allows actual interaction between the game and players by way of an interactive “board” that twists and bends. Manipulating the board in different ways controls the game and the character’s movements and actions within the game.
The computer is placed in a bag the gamer puts on his shoulder. The strap has a projector attached to it and sensors run from the laptop into the gaming board. Bending a corner of the board forward could, for instance, power up a sword, and releasing or bending it back could then bring down all the force of hell on a once mighty opponent!” says Ridden.
Allowing children to play with Apple’s new iPad is also an excellent option for keeping children entertained. Perhaps because it is new, the iPad is still working out a few minor gaming kinks but for the most part the apps are very user friendly. One game in particular has captured the attention of many; Strategy and Civilization Revolution.
“The former a hybrid game, the latter an iPad-optimized title–play much better on the iPad because its larger screen reveals more of the battlefield while still offering a simple touch mechanism for ordering around your units,” stated Chris Holt in his piece entitled Gaming on the iPad: What works, What doesn’t. Holt also highly recommends driving games like the very popular Need for Speed and Real Racing.
Noise is always a big factor when taking a road trip in a diesel pusher. Whether it is the sound of the vehicle itself or the noise from the divices being used to pass the time, noise can lead to contention. To combat noise contention the Psyko 5.1 gaming headset delivers 5.1 surround sound and peace to all those not using the headset. The Psyko 5.1 headset features 5 speakers that fit nicely into the bridge of the headset. Each ear cup features a subwoofer. Whether you are listening to the sound from a game or the music of a live rock show, both kids and adults will feel like they are smack dab in the center of the action.
By 2011, Nintendo is planning on releasing the 3DS. They claim that this console with provide a 3D experience without glasses or other accessories. This technology exists already but it has yet to be applied to gaming.
Let somebody else’s kids do the complaining. Set your kids up with some of the most advanced and exciting gaming technology available. Then watch mile after mile pass in peace and quiet!
