The 26-mile run not far from Bar Harbor is pretty much a day-long trip, but it’s also nice easy riding because it’s entirely paved. Called the Acadia Park Loop, the challenge lies in making it the entire 26 miles-at least for beginners. But you don’t have to rush, as there is a lot of great scenery, and there are attractions along the way that make it perfect for taking a break, so this trail is great place to head for a family bike ride.
Bradbury Mountain near Freeport has over 20 miles of trails to choose from. There is a $3 fee for riding, but this is very reasonable considering how well maintained the trails are. There are trails suitable for every level of skill, from beginners to advanced riders. Riding up and down the mountain is more challenging, but if you’re not ready for that yet, you can always ride the trails directly across the road.
If you’re ready to go exploring, head over toward Bangor to the City Forest. There are lots of little trails throughout this area, and while they aren’t very well marked, this does make for some great adventure and challenges-and you won’t find a big crowd here. From simple dirt routes to routes filled with rocks and roots, there’s some great variety and lots to discover.
If you travel in the vicinity of Parsonsfield, you can also find a 12-mile route called the Cedar Mountain Loop. It starts out rather steep, but once you get to the top, you’ll absolutely love the view and it will be worth all your hard climbing. Adventure awaits on the way down, too-with streams and water to navigate and cross. Maps are available to make your ride fun and adventurous according to your appetite for excitement.
Mount Agamenticus near York Village has a network of trails for all skill levels. Veering off the main paved trail, you will find more and more technical stuff like steep climbs, rocks, and really fast descents. The locals are really the only ones who have a grasp on the area and can show you all the cool trails off the beaten path. It’s easy to get lost, so don’t go exploring by yourself. Unfortunately, there are no known maps of the area.
Ten miles of trails with hills, rocks, woods, mud, and great jumps are awaiting riders near Westbrook. The Westcott Junior High School (JHS) trails have lots of little side trails to explore and enjoy, too. Check them out!
