Open Question: Space accident — Can that have an impact on earth inhabitants?
WASHINGTON (AFP) – US and Russian satellites crashed in space, the first known major accident of its kind, creating two clouds of debris that were being tracked by experts on Thursday.
A communications satellite belong to US company Iridium hit a disused Russian military satellite on Tuesday, Russian officials said.
Some 6,000 satellites have been sent into space since the Soviet Union launched the first man-made orbiter, Sputnik 1, in 1957. About 3,000 satellites remain in operation, according to NASA.
NASA’s space shuttle Discovery is to launch from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center on February 22 at the earliest, on a mission to the ISS.
Experts are increasingly concerned about orbital debris, fast accumulating from more than five decades of human activity in space.
Before the latest incident, there were over 300,000 orbital objects measuring between 1 and 10 centimeters (0.4 and four inches) in diameter and “billions” of smaller pieces, according to a report issued last year by an international monitoring group called the Space Security Index.
Travelling at speeds that can reach many thousands of kilometers (miles) per hour, the tiniest debris can damage or destroy a spacecraft worth billions of dollars.
In 1996, a French spy satellite, Cerise, was hit at about 50,000 kilometers (30,000 miles) per hour by a wheeling fragment left from an exploded Ariane rocket.

Just how are these satellites powered ?
Is it true that some are powered by miniature nuclear reactors ?
Is it true that one pound of plutonium exploding over the earth is enough to spread through the entire atmosphere and cause great harm to the earths population ?
Is it also true that more than 50 pounds now orbit the earth ?
Given the amount of debris aren’t you a little surprised collisions and accidents don’t occur far more often than they do ?
Cassini Space Probe is scheduled to blast off in October 1997 with 72 pounds of Plutonium. Of course NASA says the chances of a mishap are miniscule; BUT: remember the Challenger Space Shuttle. And forget NASA’s math: one way to calculate the probability of a launch failure is to take the total number of launches and divide by the number of failures. Guess what…THE ANSWER IS NOT ZERO!!! http://www.cruznet.net/~seangame/aa_jup.htm
Open Question: Where should I claim residency for tax purposes and am I eligible for the first time homebuyer rebate?
I am from New Jersey originally and worked/lived there for about 8 months in 2008. I then got married and bought a home in South Carolina where my husband and I intended to live, but after a month his job transferred him to Rhode Island for a 6 month project. We are renting out the home while on work project, but do not make profit off of the home, as rent is much less than mortgage. He has a license in SC and paid property tax on his car in SC. I bought a car in Rhode Island and paid property tax in Rhode Island for the car. For payroll purposes his job still takes taxes out as if he lived in New Jersey since the company is based out of New Jersey, though it is 100% travel.
