Open Question: What is the best way for me to get out of debt?
My husband is 65. I am 45. We owned our own business and sold it Sept. 2008. I gave all info. to my bookkeeper re:sell of bus. when our acct. did our taxes. She called me on April 14 and told me that we owed IRS appx. $30,0000. I filed extension and got new CPA, he thinks he can get it down to $10,000. We got lump sum down, paid off Bills associated w/ Business and many personal. We now receive a monthly pymnt., interest, of about $4000 mo. We bought our land from friend privately in 2001 for $60,0000. We now only owe $15,000 on that. Pymnt. is $500 month. My mother-in-law bought us a 4 bdr. Modular in 2003. She had dementia and did not want to go into home. We subsequently got a Home Equity Loan for about $67,000 to build deck w/handicap access and 2car garage and purchase items for home. The home is probably now worth appx. $250,000. We own one vehicle. I cannot find job in this area. My mother-in law is gone now, so it’s myself, my husband, my two daughters aged 16 & 20. 20 yr old contributes financially and pays her way. I allowed my husband to move his son (age 46), and his grandson(age 12). They do not contribute. He is recovering from knee surgery and I told him he can stay until Sep.1st. We have been unable to pay our monthly expenses. I was working for a few months & made appx. $800 supplemental income. We are more behind every month and it’s been one year. In 2012 we will receive $400,000. Final pymnt on sale of business. Our credit card debt is appx. $10,000. We were turned down on increasing home equity loan, because credit is ruined due to inability to pay . My husband keeps saying “Let’s do a reverse mortgage” I am too young and I am against this for other reasons. #1 I would have to take name off home, Penalties, and I told my husband I would prefer to sell home deal w/ bills and IRS, and we could downsize till 2012. New owners of our business offered to pay us $275,000 now on sale . I don’t want to take less for business. I think our biggest prob. is too much baggage. I told my hub we should sell, get out of debt, travel around to see where we would like to relocate. Put money down on smaller place, for me him, and 16yr old. I would rather help my daughter get out on her own, and especially his 48yr old son. I think we could make it. He keeps saying where will we live… I say “If his mother had not lived w/ us & bought Home we would have moved on. ” I told him reverse mortgage not right move, I’d rather sell. Our power bill here is $500mo in winter & $300mo in summer. I am younger and not ready to retire and everyone in this smalll town thinks because we owned our businesswe are rich. I don’t think I could buy a job here. Help? Any Advice?

Open Question: Should I allow my husbands ex wife to use our car?
Here’s the deal: Five years ago, before my husband and I were married, we asked to use his ex’s car to transport something to our house in one day. She agreed. We traveled about 250 miles in it in total, it was a long distance. A few months later, we asked again, and with major reluctancy, she provided us with it again. We thanked her and sent flowers. Since then, he and I were married and they have no relationship other than with their two sons.

The eldest son, 19 just smashed his moms car in january, totalling it. His mom got another car. As my husband and his son were comparing notes, vacation for both my household, and the ex’s household is happening. The eldest son though travells to hockey camp out of the city about 100 miles away 3 times per week.

Since his mom is planning on going on vacation out of state to another state 9 hours away, he is left with no car. His mom has contacted my ex advising she would like to borrow our car while we are away so she can lend her son her car.

My husband and I are at major head butting here. I am COMPLETELY uncomfortable with this as the “your a hypocrit” is thrown in my face “one rule for you, but something else for them”

I feel as if I am completely on trial here for not passing up the keys to something I am really uncomfortable doing, especially to people in whom I have no relationship with. Even my own blood family would not get the keys.

I tried to explain to my husband, his ex has complete custody and financial support over his boys. She should rent a car then. she has plenty of money, but in no way should I be expected to give up my feelings for an ex wife and his son! My husband looks as at it like we are helping his son out, not the ex …. however ….. I don’t believe the son will love his dad any less if he says no.

Am I over reacting? All feedback is welcome :)
Sorry I need to add to this if I had not already done so……. my husbands ex would like to borrow our car for two weeks, go on vacation, to another state over 1500 miles away? I would not feel comfortable with this at all. the car is out of site out of mind at such a distance that I would not have a problem if it was a day trip like ours, but not while we too are on vacation in Europe. Sorry am I crazy here?
You’re right sparkwinkle ….. I have often thought of that as well, however, when we did use her car 5 years ago, they were on actual speaking terms. Now they are not … and with that said, we really did get the third degree for a long time before and after using the car … i guess the thing is, I don’t trust this woman and her driving. The car she owned before had bang ups on it, and really, I find her careless .. she lets her 14 year old son drive the car because she has had too much to drink while she visits other cabin goers, and I really am so uncomfortable with that … and I am just not okay knowing that in the back of my head… i find it irresponsible. Look im not a bitch, but in this situation, a car is a huge expense for me and I don’t have the nerves to be dealing with he worry right now with two of us unemployed, stressed to the limits and searching for jobs overseas! Yeah, thats really what the reason is. And by telling my husb. that I feel like i’ll get the 3rd degree!
