A Las Vegas vacation calls to mind a variety of images. For some, it’s a non-stop party filled with drinks and casinos. For others, Las Vegas represents an enjoyable family getaway. Las Vegas’ tourism industry had its heyday in the late 60s and early 70s, thanks to a publicity campaign that marketed the city as an adult playground.
In those days, the city of Las Vegas was packed with a busy nightlife that included 24-hour bars, prominent stage performances and, of course, its infamous and ritzy casinos. In those days, visitors could start the night off with tickets to a great performance before spending the rest of the night gambling. In the wee hours of the morning, they might grab breakfast and a martini before finally hitting the sack for just a couple hours of shut-eye before starting all over.
Las Vegas vacations took on a different connotation starting in the early 90s when the city casinos began attracting entire families. This was done to compete with newer attractions like the New York New York roller coaster and the MGM Grand, with a family-focused environment.
Owners of casinos began to see that they were able to cater to an entirely new group of people families, who had their own money to spend, while retaining their old customers, the 24-7 gamblers and high-stakes players. Consequently, there started to be more child-centric performances, restaurants and things to do. Lots of casinos also began creating playgrounds and child areas so parents could continue to buy drinks and gamble.
These days, Las Vegas vacations can be anything from a kid’s fantasy-land to the adult playground of yore. Gamblers need only look up from their slot machines or roulette wheels to see a roller coaster whiz over their heads. Sponge Bob Square Pants commercials share space with ads for topless shows and escort services, now that prostitution is legal in Vegas.
The aura of the adult playground still permeates, despite the strip’s re-branding as a family vacation spot. The city flows with money and champagne, as it remains host to the greatest number of fine restaurants and dance clubs to be found in any place in the U.S.A.
